India, with 20 million diabetics, presents an alarming situation that needs to be tackled effectively at war footing.  And this figure is rising every year.  According to WHO (World Health Organization), the world would have 300 million diabetics by the year 2025, and India alone would be contributing 20% of them making it the number one victim of this dreaded disease!  In India in the next quarter of a century, no of people expected to have diabetes will be 60-75 millions.

The highest occurrence of diabetes in India is attributed to our food habits – excessive consumption of oil, sugar, and carbohydrates, combined with sedentary life style.

The urban population in India is the worst affected with an annual rise of nearly 10%.  For a low-income family, as much as 25% of the income is spent on blood sugar control medicines alone.

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder in which the body is unable to properly use and store glucose (a form of sugar) resulting in hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and glycosuria (sugar in urine).  This happens as a result of deficiency of insulin secretion by the pancreas or insulin resistance.  Insulin is a hormone that enables the body to use glucose (found in foods) that a body requires for energy.

There are two major types of diabetes. In type I (juvenile-onset or insulin-dependent) diabetes, the body completely stops producing insulin, and therefore one must take daily insulin supplements (injections) to survive. In type II (adult-onset or non-insulin dependent) diabetes, the body produces insufficient insulin to properly convert food into energy. This usually occurs if one is over forty, overweight and has a family history of diabetes.
